Smart switches connect to your home Wi-Fi and allow you to remotely control devices such as lights by using an app on your smartphone or tablet.
This can be done from anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection.
The SAL Pixie Smart Switch links to the Pixie app. The app allows you to operate your lights from anywhere that has a Wi-Fi connection.
You can also set a schedule for when you would like the lights to turn on and off. It is also able to dim the lights.
It will also allow you to add switches in other positions to operate the same group of lights.
Other functions for smart switches may be to operate a storage hot water system.
For example, if you lived in Canberra and had a holiday house in Sydney.
You may not visit the Sydney property for a few months.
So leaving a large storage hot water tank running would be a waste of money.
Turning it off at the switchboard would mean you have a cold shower when you arrive in Sydney, and they do take some time to heat up.
However, a smart switch installed as a control device for the hot water tank would allow you to activate the power the night before you travel to Sydney, providing plenty of hot water on your arrival.
A small contractor would be required to switch the larger electrical load a hot water tank would draw.
